Oh, they're not that bad! They're designed to catch the "vanity blogger" - people who want to see which posts they are mentioned in. That's why I NEVER show mine: it would only contain something like 90% of the active bloggers, and it does NOT show what was interesting in the actual writers.
It might be meaningful, though, if the distlist allowed commenting on each blogger in the list.... Or where one could give ratings on bloggers (no stars for those not read, and one to five stars for each posting, with an "average" star rating once a week or once a month).
But I agree - distlist posting should be discouraged!
