"Romantic" (or should that be "romanticised" ) love is a creation of the relatively recent past. It's this stupid idea that one can "fall in love", and that such love will lead to the Cinderella form of "happily ever after". The Romans, and most other cultures, before and after, did not believe that it would last, that it was a form of lust. That's why some modern cultures still believe in arranged marriages, which are not selling the bride (or groom) to the highest bidder, but the families deciding whether they could live together.
Funny thing about arranged marriages: they tend to lead to longer lasting relationships, with fewer "infidelities".
