Witchflower I remember you saying you can't change because of the same reason which seems crazy. If I changed jobs and went to something where they pay more of the medical or even a different insurance carrier they might not allow treatment for his " preexisting" problem. That seems unfair to me but it is our system.

Ca88andra I wasn't really complaining about the costs. One thing I have hated is the mountains of paperwork. I had to check on bills and resubmit bills and keep it all organized. If you don't send in the bill to the insurance then they say it was sent in too late to pay.  I had to argue about some of his medications which the insurance said are not usual or customary and then I raise hell and call and write letters. I do not know how someone who is not educated could deal with it.

anthony1 every Canadian I know brags about the medical system there. We in the US do have to wait at emergency rooms and urgent care- Many emergency rooms in the US are being shut down because they are the most costly to have trauma centers for say gunshot victims who have no insurance. They are required to treat everyone.

It's outrageous that you pay so much

for the insurance.  I pay $126/month to cover myself and my husband, the employer pays about $500/month.

I, too, can never quit or retire.  We have medical conditions, and I need this insurance.  Nice, isn't it?

Well-thought out and well-written article.  I like your plan.

I can't believe you pay so much! Thank goodness for the Australian medical system, even if the waiting for services is incredibly long.

You have been through a lot and you make some great points. Hope your son gets really well. I am happy I'm in Canada though because even if the service is bad, at least it's free.

frankenkitty - that was just the drugs and things insurance does not cover. His total bills a couple years back were in the hundred thousands a year that they did cover. I can't ever change jobs because I would be afraid a new insurance company would declare him a preexisting problem and not cover.  Your post and two others inspired me to make my own overhaul. $50000 for a single person is a comfortable living in some parts of the US but maybe not in CA so OK I up the number see the edit

I think you should raise the 30000 to 50000,
because a 14,000 bill on a family making less than 50000 is enormous.  It's a good start, definately mail it to the president.  Take care
