The Difficult Path of Living According to Ethics and Principle

Yes, I do find it curious when those who claim to be "Pro-life" favor state execution and unprovoked war -- and withholding health insurance from those who cannot afford to pay -- among other life-endagering things. I think there is an ethical contradiction there, and it is inconsistant with the Gospel of Life. A truely "Pro-life" position would be much more comprehensive that its advocates tend to approach it from.

In terms of behavioral consistency, I think many "liberals" are only fashionably liberal. They won't really make any real sacrifices for their "liberalism" if such sacrifices are required of them. And I suspect that their "liberalism" comes from a place of self-importance and ego-inflation.

On the other hand, I think many "conservatives," while perhaps well-meaning and often personally generous, really underestimate the systemic conditions that hold people back. They also take their power and privileges for granted.

To live ethically and according to principle (as best we can -- and we will always fall short of our ideal) I think requires a great deal of ongoing reflection. I think this is why some Christian traditions build in a mechanism for periodic self-examination and self-criticism.

Anyway, good post. Thanks for sharing it.
