i did not even know that blogs end up in the search engines...or maybe I just wouldn't expect someone to ever look me up..

What the hell are search engines?

Klara...Karla...YOU girl.....

I have been here since 12/31/04, so I haven't become real familiar with your work.  It is plain to see that you are very valued by your fellow writers here.  This post alone has left me with a very good insight into the reason for that.

If you haven't done, or are not doing, a book for writers on the Internet, I highly recommend that you give it some serious thought.  The Net has become a remarkable work source for both freelance and paychecked writers.  Unfortunately, it has also become a remarkable source of money for theives, extortionists, and con artists.  Copyright laws have not kept pace with the Internet, and may never catch up.  On the Net, writers must fend for themselves.  Knowing the ''tricks of the trade'' is essential, making your type of knowledge invaluable.

I haven't really known you, but I already miss you............ JJ

Even using a silly name it is worth remembering that.......................
things can come back to haunt you. My biggest regret is my silly blogit name

Dear Karla, thanks for the tips dear. I wonder whether there is on the web a list with 'already in use' pen names. I personnaly always use my pen name (I have 2 but mostly use Voyager) iso my real name. It's more about being shy, then protecting I need to tell.

Hear/see/read ya soon!

Hey Karla

My first dealings with the name retracing was after ordering something online for the first time, before you know it, everything came out of the wood works. I think there's no way to ecaspe it. If I ever go into wriitng, I've thought about just doing a cher or maddona, the one name thing. Take care. ~Silly

There are also some on here, Argus, that are very technically proficient
besides myself (Moondawg for one) and there are services and software packages that are quite affordable and easy to understand if you should decide to put up your own Web site. Having your own site allows you to tie in all your Blogit work also and if you leave Blogit you can still post the work there, as it is your own.

Dear Klara,
Thank you so much for illuminating the pros and cons. Most helpful. I'll have to read it several times, then do some serious head-scratching before I decide. Thanks also for the amplification provided by the commentors; a useful framework for decision making.

Yeap, if you want to remain more anonymous, Symph, use a pen name!

posted by KlaraRoberts on January 16, 2005 at 9:28 AM | link to this | reply

That's exactly what I mean, CA. Everything that appears online
eventually ends up indexed and cached by the Search Engines. Caution is always in order!

You certainly should have your own Web site, Renigade.
Your work would attract others.

I'm sorry to hear that Tweed. The bubble was disastrous for many.
You've been around quite a while by the sound of it.

I have several Web sites myself, Moon. It's a great way to have an online
portfolio. I also optimize heavily, so the site is found easily, another technique that is not difficult to do. You've added nicely to this Moon.

They sure can, Saroo!

During the dotcom era, I owned a few portals; had geeks to run them for me. Lost it all in the bubble. I've learned. Google cannot find me.

Better yet, if you want exposure
create your own web site, with a sampling of your work, a resume and contact information. You can include links to this site on all correspondence, and even here at blogit. These days it is inexpensive and quite easy to put up a simple site, it also gives you a more professional image.

This is good advice. You are putting yourself out "there" for all
to see and read. So be careful! Our writings can turn up in unlikely places.

Thanks for the advice.

Thanks Klara for the food for thought.
I'm pretty anonymous or is that boring??? I can find my nickname on the web but not my real name!! Oh, and thanks for mentioning Argus - I've not read him before and enjoyed reading some of his posts.

KlaraRoberts

Great advice as usual.

Me, I'm gonna stay with my Wiley Coyote family name,  'cause when a good editor discovers a coyote like me, heck she'll even overlook the bad writing right?

posted by WileyJohn on January 15, 2005 at 10:26 PM | link to this | reply

Klara, interesting as always and something to think about. I remember being bored one day and doing a search on my name. It came up with several articles I had written for a sports website. Made me feel a mile high at the time! lol

posted by Ca88andra on January 15, 2005 at 8:21 PM | link to this | reply

This is a good post which makes me think of Madonna. She didn't care who said what about her-as long as they kept taking about her. So, is bad writing really bad?  If you are out there in front, people can't forget you. Now, do I want to be remembered for bad writing-I don't know. But what if bad writing makes your life good?  When I get famous-I'll give you the answers.

More food for thought again Klara.
I don't write under my own name because I have such a snoop in my life. Ugh!

yes, there again, good point, Klara...sometimes the language has a purpose,
and I admit to cussing, even in my writing, but it's really not necessary to use vulgarity to the extent I've seen around here.  a little of that goes a long way.

posted by Gheeghee on January 15, 2005 at 4:32 PM | link to this | reply

Yeap, and not use curse words or otherwise be offensive, Ghee.
While Blogit seems "self contained" when we're here, it's actually quite public!

I always try to post quality stuff just for the sake of quality, but this is another great reason to run spellcheck just once more.

It's only your first name, though, Kelli, so you're pretty safe.
Argus had questions on using our full names, as opposed to a pen name. I don't even know your full name now and if I don't many others don't either! LOL

posted by KlaraRoberts on January 15, 2005 at 4:07 PM | link to this | reply

Well,, Klara, I write and I use my real name which may be an unintelligent decision but that wouldn't suprise me in the least.  I am crippled because truthfully I just never think to not be truthful and that may sound like I'm bragging but it's far from it because I have gotten into some pretty big troubles for being truthful.  Somehow I missed out on that switch that tells me to not tell the truth when need be.  Oh well, what can I say except that it's the truth?
