Revisionist History
Thanks for your interesting entry. Should it surprise anyone that Thomas Merton (Fr. Louis, OCSO)is controversial to the Roman Catholic Hierarchy? After all, he was a man who lived an active life prior to entering Gethsemani and continued to be a searcher and leader in spirituality. He was not the typical cleric who was formed by entering a minor seminary at a young age. His work has helped millions understand both Western and Eastern monasticism and spiritual practice. I guess the definition of "lapsed" is subject to interpretation. It is interesting to note that this "lapsed" monk is buried alongside his brothers at Gethsemani Monastery. I was privileged to visit his gravesite. Maybe had "lapsed" after his death. Bishop Benjamin Evans, FSP Old Catholic Bishop
