Writing is hard work.  All your readers know that the composure on the surface is achieved by frantic paddling beneath the surface.

It's mostly tongue in cheek Beach,
I know I'm improving - but there is a certain amount of freedom in just writng for yourself and not getting paid for it. :) Besides I don't people accusing me of getting a big head by saying "Yeah I know what you mean, now that I'm a FANTASTIC writer I'm feeling more pressure to write EVEN BETTER!!!!" LOL!

Writing comes easily for me. It's crafting the words into precisely what I wish them to be that's hard.

For years this never troubled me and I just churned stuff out like a good "professional". Now the process is far more painful. I don't like to hear you talk yourself down but then of course like you I do so all the time

Yes in some things accuracy is important but I am thinking more of the way that some people "love" writing and think it so easy and never sit and search to find the words and never struggle over the conception of the piece

Sometimes I think it gets harder because we know how correct it all needs
to be. If there's an error, someone will notice!

Yes even though it is hard work it is a treat to spend time in that way

Scriber, I get the feeling he was quoting what women say to him

Beachbelle - I think it is that writers who are serious about their work are continually trying to improve their writing.   They are in competition not so much with other writers as they are in competition with what they have already written.   As one improves, it gets more difficult to continue to improve.   One has to use more brain power, more creativity, and more time.   Its the same as anything else.   Look at the Olympic atheletes.  That is on the physical side of things but the brain and mental abilities basically works in the same way.

"adore" writing sounds like a woman. Actually, most writers repeat
themselves in the basics, a lot of the time.  That is more true of the popular best selling types than others I think. Often that is a good thing, since the reader is looking for more of the same, usually. On Blogit I doubt if it makes much difference if we repeat ourselves.  If I did, only a handful of readers would even know.

I'm glad you said that
as I love writing fiction...but it is hard...it takes me ages to pick characters and so on....I really like peace and quiet when writing fiction...I guess thats what I call my serious writing...as it takes a lot of thought

Nothing worth having ever comes easily. That one I've learnt.

If we don't get any better....
...there's the fear of stagnation. In any creative endeavour we have to strive to become better each time right? That spark has to glow higher and brighter each time...hopefully!

This is such a great post, Beach.
I've "raised the bar" for myself over the years, and the work has become sometimes painfully difficult now. As we progress, we do tend to expect more of ourselves.

Writing is hard work... I need discipline so I can move forward with the writing.

Beach,
I suspect that the more you write, and the better you get, the less you are willing to just put out a half-considered post. You are a professional writer, and I suspect that you hold all of your writing to the same high standards. I, on the other hand, and write crap all day long if I want - since no one is paying me for it. ;)
