jimmy - if only my children liked chilli....*sigh*... I can't get them to eat anything spicy and my eldest hates anything "mixed together" so thats that....

Moondawg, as an adult I discovered many more foods that I was willing to eat. I think children like routine and similarity. Thanks for reading.

Yeah, I think choice is important...
Jaime is allowed to choose which of the available meals he would prefer most of the time...and I usually just give him money for lunch, I should get him on the free meal plan, I'd qualify, but pride's a bitch...right now he is on a chilli kick. All he wants is for me to make more chilli (I make it from scratch), and eat it with tortilla chips...the best way of course. Tonight I had to say, "No chilli! You've had chilli four nights running! We have to eat something else. Do you want chicken and vegetables or a big breakfast? So we had breakfast at 6:30 in the evening.

Until the time I left home
It was eat what was fixed or don't eat, at supper. The other meals were more open to choice. When we were older we didn't have to put anything on our plate we didn't care for, but like you said if it was on the plate it had best be eaten. After being in the Army I learned to like a lot of foods that I never thought I would.

Divine - things never stop changing with children. One simply has to adapt or go crazy....

Ca88andra ...
I agree with your parenting style wholeheartedly regarding the allowance of choice for kids. I try to give my 3-year-old choices of food, but he is at the age where I will give him a choice and he will ask for something totally different. It's quite independent of him (and cute) but I feel like I have to draw the line somewhere. For now. Things seem to change on a daily basis around here. ;-)
