I have been called a foodie- which I took offense to, as I do think food is an art and nourishes our soul as well. Therefore, making guests happy is a pleasure in itself.

Food is art for some people.
My dad cooks like he's an artist. I only know because my husband is an artist. I think you covered most of the reasons. I try to cook things that make people think of happy times, like cookies and desserts. Take care :)

I treat my guests as family, they get whatever we are having. But if I'm cooking for a dinner party I always make more than enough.

I entertain a lot.
Believe it or not, I choose foods that balance "colors". It's the look of the finished table. Some yellows, oranges, reds, greens, etc. I'm anal as all heck.

I guess its for the purpose of the party.
When alone, many make do with a one dish meal.

For me I believe it may be a habit carried over from generations past. People were always welcome and it was a blessing to be able to feed them.
