pappy -- I love it - great comment
The failing point of all ideals always points back to human shortcomings does it not.

gomedome,
i would say that the IDEA of religion IS perfect, the form is that of grateful people worshipping their loving creator.  The application, however, is found with warty, filthy, needy humans with their grasping hands and their mouths working lies.  And that's just the clergy.

pappy -- there is definate truth in what you say
however religion can, has and always will upon occassion act as a law unto itself with no safeguards, checks or balances. Where the dirty politician has the fear of discovery and is constantly afraid of tipping his hand to the srutiny of the public and other politicians, religion on the other hand can get away with murder if perceived to be acting on behalf of the big guy. I've seen this first hand as I bore witness to residential school system in it's last years of existance. A modern day atrocity perpetuated by and proliferated exclusively by religion on behalf of religion so I hope you are not suggesting to me that religion has completely clean hands.

That's right, gomedome
Unfortunately religion is the constant whipping boy for the trouble that religion is trying to solve.  It sounds like the political dirty trick of blaming your opponent for already doing the bad thing that you are about to get caught at.

pappy -- I can't disagree with that
this particular landlord happened to be an Irish Protestant immigrant. Mankind's willingness to pursue material wealth at the cost of all principles will always be the ongoing antethis to the message that most organized religions impart. Greed is simply a part of the imperfect human make up.

man-boy -- eliminating the anamosity is the toughest part
for years my attitude reaked with bitterness but for the most part I think I have managed to overcome it. At least in outward expression and treatment towards others.

I'm sorry your family was trashed like that.
The Catholics and Protestants have been doing that to each other for several hundred years in Belfast.  It is easy to blame their religion for it, but the fact is most of the hatred is between the have English and the have-not Irish.  Jesus, and many others, have always taught that materiality is the biggest cause of strife, yet most of these worldwide struggles are over posession of the land, not higher principles.

Hey!

I am glad I have lived in a society that has allowed me the freedom to go beyond the barbarian I was.

Some societies put life threatings stumbling blocks in the way of self-growth. Here we are limited pretty much only by our own fears. And that is what it is. It is fear and sometimes sheer laziness that keeps people from feeling. Like that landlord. That is a harsh memory brother.

From your writing though I can sense that you hold little regret or true animosity.

Have a good new year bud!
