I thought afterwards that most people are probably in shock so I should take that into account when I hear their comments. It is too easy to put it out of minds when we are far away. It is almost unreal from a distance.

Amen to that BB.
There is a fund here and I am thinking about making a donation as well. I shouldn't have to think about it, but somehow, things have a tendency to seem far removed when they happen so far away. By the same token, the world has now become such a small place, compliments of all the modern technology. I cannot absorb the sheer fact of so many thousands of people dead. It really does make people seem small minded to complain when they escaped from such a huge disaster unscathed. Thanks for keeping it within our view BB.

Beachbelle, I'm glad I posted my distribution list and asked about whom I am not reading. Thanks for letting me know. I went and read this post right away, because I ordinarily have a policy of reading at least one post from every person who comments to my blog. Overall I am a lazy reader, so I need some motivation.

I'm glad I read your post too, because it was very good.

Beach, I don't see any problem
with you being able to do something useful!
Just imagine the psychological impact this event will have. There are still many being treated for PTSD from 9/11.

The commercial side to Christmas - the adverts etc are appallingly crass. I hate how standards seem to drop at this time of year. I don't listen to commercial radio and I only watch small amounts of commercial tv - favortie shows

Well that's quite a vacuum you got yourself into. Not easy to do in modern life. Occasionally I have to switch off too although years of working in newsrooms made me something of a newsfiend.
In this case I am glad I knew soon after it happened - because then I could do something even if it was only to send money.

My retreat from blogging also included a retreat from the news. Believe it or not, the first I heard of the disaster was here. Even when one's goal is not to inform, it can.

That's one reason I like to spend Christmas alone...TV off and only CDs
playing so I don't have to hear commercials on the radio...people often make me feel like an alien around this time of year because, as you say, they are mean spirited and very thankless...

how very true!
It is amazing how much damage there is in Asia. And it's not something that can just be cleared up in a matter of a few weeks, it will takes months, probably even years to get it back to some semblance of normalcy. But even after the rebuilding is done, you know that's something that will be ever present on the minds of everyone that survived it.
Speaking as someone who runs a charitable org., I commend you in your efforts to help.

An absolutely phenomenal post, Beach. Seriously. Your writing absolutely
dazzled me in this piece. You combined the facts with the humanity of it all so well, I read this three times. You are a woman of solid character, Beach.

Let's hope the world can catch her collective breath before another one of these happens. I can give what little I have, and ponder all this in my heart. Welcome to your world. This is just too much. I cry when I watch the news.

tsunami
beachbelle: i wish more like you would contribute what one can to mitigate the effects of tsunami-hit areas of southeast asia. it is the humaneness that matters; not how much you are able to spare. this is the occasion that will make drops adding up to an ocean. look at Bush, the american boss. how miser he is in rendering assistance but how wayward he is for his war needs. india has thankfully declined aid from other countries, suggesting the aid just now be diverted to more needy. on its own it is rendering all possible help to sri lanka and meeting its own needs in Andaman-Nicober group of islands, as well as several states in mainland india.
People of india have come out in large numbers to donate what one can. we have done it before and we shall do it now. but besides the tsunami warning centre, the world must wake up to the needs to overcome the effects of natural disasters that may be coming. instead warring nations, there must be nations cooperating to make the planet safe for human civilization.

I think one would have to find some sort of detachment to cope there. It is something reporters must keep in mind. I was watching it so much that I had to figure out something I could do. Still thinking on that about the writing.

I know. I feel that to sit and observe is inadequate. But where does it start when so many localities have been destroyed along the coasts of Sri Lanka, India and even the Maldives (which were in danger of sinking anyway. Every time I see pictures of Phi Phia and Phuket I recall my visit there.

I've actually had to stop watching the news. The stories of families losing thier children are gut wrenching to me. I would like to beone of those people who leap into action to help, but in all honesty I would probably be emotionally crippled when I got there.

As someone who goes into disaster areas for a living, I can't tell you how affected I've been over the devastation in Indonesia. God! I long to go over there and help. I guess somewhere along the way, this stuff got into my blood. It's more than a job now.

It's fun to try out new ways to write.
My husband always tells me he doesn't go for that "finding your inner child crap" but it can be so liberating to play sometimes--like trying out a new painting style, for example. Blogging is so great because it doesn't take putting the piece of paper into the typewriter and some days some people actually come and comment....but it can all be erased in a flash if we feel the need to start over again. I've written approximately 1600 pages over the last two years and every so often I clean house, so to speak... I've heard of people who've written three or four books before they've gotten published. I'm doing my preliminaries here, that's all... Keep on writing! Keep on chugging along... The worst comment I got about my art one day was that it looked like a photograph--there was no "style", she said somewhat sneeringly.... I liked your style just fine...I'm just saying it's good to play sometimes...
