Those guys are wonderful fiction fodder

Gomedome. It is very sad but hilarious.
Some people are so busy on the phone that they are not living life.

Hi beachbelle
Some people need things like that to get the message. The guys from Finland I alluded to in my Blog on this subject have "cellphoneitis" really bad. Little wonder however as they are from Nokia, a city that boasts one of the world's foremost cellphone manufacturers. It is inherent in their culture, Finland being a small country of under 6 million there is a nationalistic pride and level of grassroots support for any industry that makes it mark globally.  They simply cannot comprehend that some people in the world do not want a radiation emitting techno gadget glued to their ear constantly, not to mention the distraction it creates from the real world. One of these guys as an interternational sales co-ordinator laughably has 3 seperate cellphones for trully global reach. He wears them all on his belt in holsters. A modern day Finnish "phoneslinger".

It may have made her worse
or maybe she never had the courage to use a cellphone again. I tend to be cynical too.

I would probably assume that the events didn't change her.  But that's probably just the cynic in me.

It is like being online - you never know who is listening but I take comfort that most of what is said is too boring to be of interest

I have a cell
but it's usually off.  I have it for emergency use and for the kids to be able to reach me.....other than that, I seldom use it.

I don't believe cell phones are secure... who ELSE is listening?

posted by cmoe on December 21, 2004 at 7:34 AM | link to this | reply

O man. I hate those things. I do not have a cell phone myself.
I did once, but I got tired of turning it off, just to see who called. OYE.

Very nice indeed.  Many a time I've wanted to do something like.  But I'll just have to settle for saving up and buying one of them cell phone disruptor devices.  MWA HA HA HA!

Beachie: main place at the moment is a new Lit Agency in London who I've been in touch with for children's fiction. Plus writing two sketches for school (both finished). Plus promoting my Writing Days to schools. Plus a proposal to another London-based theatre company. All sorts of gubbins. Plus doing preparations for Chrimbo while poor Sam's still at work. Busy, busy, busy. And loving it.

Dave
No its not for blogging but for a competition for a short story.

Good on you for looking after the lady bloggers although I am not really a queen. I don't believe in them even though except when invited to a Queen's house for tea

Beachie, glad to be of service. That's twice in a week. My 'writing's not rocket science' was taken up by Klara.

Much Love and looking forward to the post,

Do get those numbers down pronto. I have no problems with using a cellphone but I don't use it much. Mine often doesn't ring for days but then I only give the number out very selectively. My phone is for my covenience not for the convenience of others.

Your thought has given me an excellent idea for a story. I will mention you in the credits I promise

posted by beachbelle on December 21, 2004 at 5:12 AM | link to this | reply

I can't believe they threw the phone out!
Sometimes you really wish you could do that but then the whole - wilful damage or stealing of someone's property comes to mind.

I never use to believe in cell phones - even in Japan I never had one, although it would have been useful the number of times I couldn't find my friends when we were meant to meet somewhere.

I finally bought one in Taiwan - a necessity rather than an accessory, but back here in Aus, it really is for emergencies only.

Funny how gadgets can start to run your life if you're not careful.

Oh, and I keep reminding myself to put people's phone numbers in an address book, your comment is a timely reminder for me to finally do it.

I wonder if a thief ever stops to consider how much of your soul they're stealing with their lifted item. Clearly they don't. Otherwise they'd stop.

My cellphone was stolen and I wanted to punch the thief's lights out. Te worst thing was all the numbers that were lost never to ne replaced

The other moral of this story is that even people we despoise can teach us something. Thank you for the compliment. It means a lot.

You're a magnificent storyteller.

The last time I nearly got punched was over a mobile phone. Not a woman, but a man with flaring nostrils. I backed off and sat down. I'd said my piece.

I prefer things to be quiet but I agree you hear some curious one-sided conversations. It does seem pointless to get worked up about cellphones. they are here to stay

posted by beachbelle on December 20, 2004 at 3:25 PM | link to this | reply

If I had been that lady I would have been furious! I don't talk on my phone that often, but it also doesn't worry me if others talk on theirs. I would have been interested just to listen to her conversations. There might have been some interesting material for writing.

Ell has always been a fervent hater of selfish cell-phone users. Today whilst I was typing the next opus, the phone rang.  It was Ell phoning from Wal-Mart on her new cell-phone, "It's me," she said, then there was a loooong silence.  "My God. I've joined them."  The phone clicked off.  This should be interesting, beachbelle.

That sounds like my worst nightmare. Why do people feel the need to phone so much? My mother keeps ringing me to ask why I never ring.

Beachy sometimes I want to throw out the window
In my family we all had different phones and plans, and basically I only turned mine on when I was going somewhere or shopping. Now we are all on a family plan, it couldn't be  worse, I hear from them now more then ever. Even now my youngest is on vacation in Florida and calls all the time, drives me nots.

posted by scoop on December 20, 2004 at 2:26 PM | link to this | reply

LOL! I would have liked to have seen that.
It seems to me that that advent of cell phones has provided people with another reason to be rude. I like days at home when the phone doesn't ring. I can do the things I need to do and not fret about what else is going on. I have been known to ignore the phone too. Especially at nap time. I don't want to waste that precious hour when the kids are aleep talking on the phone!
