You are so right about the government borrowing money like crazy. They've been doing that a long time, and even more so now. Our trade deficit is owed mostly to China, I believe. Eventually our creditors will be less enthusiastic about lending us money. Fortunately, the Social Security system can pay for itself for a long while as long as we don't lose more tax revenues. There is still about $1.25 going into the system for every $1.00 being distributed in benefits. Obviously, that will change soon unless we change something. There will be fewer workers per retiree over time, but this I suspect will not reduce the revenue stream as much as people worry it will, because while there will be relatively fewer workers, they will be making more money -- especially those in the higher income levels. The question is whether that will bring in enough tax revenue to pay for Soc. Sec. long term. Economic growth will help somewhat. But if the recent tax cuts are made permanenent, less of that GDP will be paid in taxes, and revenue will shrink overall. That's when Social Security will get dicey. President Bush and his supporters want to continue making a modestly progressive tax code even more modest, and less progressive. That will mean financial security for the wealthy only. But the wealthy are already doing fine. The government has an extensive apparatus for protecting them -- tax loopholes, corporate subsidies, special contracts. It's the people who need Social Security most who will be in a position to get the least in the long term.

Thanks for the comments.
I am generally a Bush supporter and a conservative in general, but I think we need good straight talk on things. Don't give me a slant. Let the critics slant the deal. Give me some good numbers I can look at and I can determine if I support it or not. Thanks for the read.

I Have Hopes...
...for Iraq, too, but not high ones. Talk of civil war is getting more common on the BBC commentary right now. No one wants to see it, but the possibility looms large, especially if the elction is delayed.

When you wrote - "I just think some of the critics are against President Busy" I guess you'd forgotten that he is anything but - more weeks holiday prior to 9/11 than any other president ever! In the camp of the lazy, if you ask me!

And when you wrote - "I also think the administration has no idea if their numbers and plan will work" it sounds a lot like what I was writing a year ago about the Iraqi invasion. And how right I was! You'll probably be proved right, too.

Clueless is too small a word for this "administration".

Good post!
