No, we need to know when to swear. Strong words are often ill used.

BB, We only need to know how to not swear in formal writing I guess! No
one is suggesting weak writing!

Positive writing may be about unpleasant subjects. Actually I don't believe it is all to do with the reader's perception. To create a piece of text for whatever purpose can be a very positive experience. Much has to do with one's motive for creating that text

Hey, what is everyone insinuating here????? LOL
I'm as quiet and unassuming as a church mouse. A dork who never says a peep to anyone. A book worm, school marm type.

Positive writing is defined not by what the writer gets out of it, but the reader.

Of course it did, Beachie! I'm always so quiet! Whatever do you mean???

Thinking again. This post may need a disclaimer to say that it is nothing to do with the recent discussion about G-rated blogs.

That is something.

I have found that some seemingly banal and domestic material reveals great truths about life and if you can have a laugh at the same time so much the better. To be positive is to express yourself honestly - that's all.

Thankfully that is only one of a few posts that I could repeat. But some themes do warrant a re-run. When I look back generally I can't believe the change in myself over the time.

Make no disclaimers. Why should you?

Deverdoodle, this post is at the very heart of why I write
It is a great gift when we have the opportunity to reach an audience as we do here. It is like giving an artist a room in a gallery and saying go ahead, take this space and do what you like with it. I was at an open art prize event yesterday and like always it is possible to pick the works produced which are purely produced to be sold - technically proficient but emotionally-void landscapes. Then you see the works which may not necessarily sell where the idea is the thing.
At times all of of us need to move on and try news styles.

I write to be read certainly but my main goal in all of that is to put forward something that people can think about. I get weary from time to time, , and this post touches on this, of people not recognizing that this is a space to actually do something rather than making the competition the thing. Having a space to write is the thing. Many do not have this opportunity

BB, I see you've been through the wringer a time or two before.

This is not to detract from anyone else (See that? The climate now has me being careful and making disclaimers ) but that will happen once you express what becomes an unpopular opinion.

It is always going to be about something, I suppose. Next week, it might be something else, but I for one would like to see more writing oriented discussion going on around here, maybe then we wouldn't feel the need to 'blog-lite' to stay in the ratings.

I like your posts Beach, even the one's that are over a year old. There is
such a turnover here that we need posts like this reposted once a year.  It seems to me the only negative thing would be if a blogger still here from last year read it at that time and did not benefit from it in some way.   But, then, we all need reminders from time to time.

Beachbelle...

Your post has merit and I agree with some of what you are saying. But I think part of the problem lies in the fact that people tend to forget that some writing is purely an act of creativity and is in a sense an artistic expression. Art is subjective and should not conform to any set standard. It should be free-flowing and come from the artists heart, despite the backlash of the public. Once an artist begins to create to please one part of society or another, they are no longer creating, they are conforming an the creative nature begins to die.

Your are weary. Maybe it is time to re-examine why you right. Do you do it for you or for those who will read you?

posted by Deverdoodle on December 10, 2004 at 6:45 AM | link to this | reply

I tend to write positively.
Some may find it banal.. others may just find it amusing. Then again, if I wanted it to be really deep I wouldn't post in the humor section! I save my truly deep thoughts for my poetry and my personal notebooks. Good post beach.

Wow, Beachie. The last line made me sit back and left me speechless.
We're obviously just all caught in a pattern of behaviors that spins in the same circle day after day, year after year.

I've learned things here, at least I feel I have. I have learned from you, obviously, as you and I express our total honesty on each others' posts. If we like something, we say so, if we don't like something, we also say so, and then we use this to better the writing. Input on writing is never personal, as you and I both know. I've also learned from others here that write for a living, and also those that simply write well, as they also "alert" me if I'm being redundant, incorrect, or, God forbid, "boring". I use this to examine my writing and apply what I've learned. Others seem to feel overall that if you don't "rah rah" for them each and every time, you somehow are dull witted or incompetent, with a chip on your shoulder. Of course, this is not the case, as those of us that give honest appraisals of work are just simply "doing unto others as we do unto ourselves".

I also read your post below, and like you, I'm weary.

Norseman,
I think that at least the election was a real issue and certainly worth getting passionate about.

Beachbell...
This was very enlightening to see the original date if this post.  It is still well written and on the money.  I thought when the election was over the bickering would stop, alas I was mistaken.  Perhaps it is an element of human nature we witness from this perch on blogit?  Everyday I find it interesting.  Good post.

the problem with that is that no one is going to be happy all the time with

everyone.  my positive could be your negative, or vice-versa.  You; however, I would assume (and I should not assume) to mean NEGATIVE negative, but again, I think a lot of it depends on ones perspective.  I never meant to be negative because I WAS and still am negative sometimes, but you cannot help but be what you are until things turn around.  We need that streetsign here that says "one way".  lolol, some people like it one way, some people like it the other!  I don't think there will ever be a middle, or a crossroads because no one heeds the stopsigns, invariably there's always a crash!

Which means this kind of thing like we have been dealing with the last few days has been going on since pretty much the beginning, huh?
