what an excuse!!

Westend: India and Pakistan have enough wisdom not to use nuclear weapons against each other. USA has been the only country in the world to use atom bomb, the early version of fission weapon. Why did you stop using it? Your government threatened to use it against Soviet Union, China and Vietbnam but did niot dare to use it. Why? Simple, radioactive fallout is not limited by political boundaries, and second, retaliation was guaranteed. This was what came to be known as MAD - mutual assured destruction. Besides, cultural background too plays a role. So do not think that all non-US citizens are that stupid.

Further, why has your government removed sanctions against Pakistan and made a huge supply of qweapons that cannot be used against terrorists - do you need F16 fighters, anti-ship missiles, tanks to fight terrorists? Think again.

Kashmir

I appreciated your piece on Kashmir and the efforts being made at the subcontinental level to win peace. However, one must not forget the arms race that continues. USA has supplied arms and weapons to Pakistan in the name of fighting al qaida. But does it need tanks and anti-ship missiles? India interpretes the weapons supplied to pakistan as bolstering Pakistan's striking power against India. So it gets newer weaponry from Russia. And now US defence secretary is in New Delhi with offers  of arms to India. Its a growing spiral.

The two biggest arms suppliers of the world are very anxious to sell their wares. They even encourage these to be used, for, replenishment means more money. Till we understand this, there is no way that peace can be ensured. Can people in Pakistan and India demand a halt to fresh arms supply? If they can, there is some hope for peace. Sadhanm

well, loanlady
we have to begin bulding real bridges to the world
instead of being an isolationist, monolithic power
people have to see that we are on their side instead of perceiving that we are exploiting the rest of the world for our own benefit.

In my opinion, one large threat to our safety is a thirteen year old boy who lives in a city such, as he surely is very poor and easy to recruit.... Reach those boys before some evil intentioned militaristic zealot does.

well -- our gov doesn't want
the american people to think that our relationship with Pakistan might be on very fragile ground. or that we might need to make a choice here -- keeping the present relationship with pakistan in our "war with terrorism" would present a problem if Pakistan and India went to war -- and then if they exchanged nuclear attacks? -- and if China came in as Pakistan's ally? Too much being kept at a very low profile and too many people not wanting to see it.
