Indeed
You make a darn good case - it's worth noodling way more than I have thus far.  The audience is a crucial element - many thanks for the thoughtful musings.

Good to see you too. It has been too long

I agree with with you. It is arrogant to expect to detain readers too long.

I too have translated a lot of complicated stuff into everyday language

True but we shouldn't assume that is the only group watching.

I do. I know too many people just like that

In that case perhaps you and me write only for each other ;-)

I am not sure we should think about it too much but just remember that all readers do not frequent downtown bookstores. It can be surprising to find who is reading.

Hah
Great quote - you know, I always assume my readers will be like me, which is probably way off base - I don't put enough thought into this, clearly :)

I'm pretty certain that I'm the only person who reads me. But that can't be true can it? I write for me, and the fact that other people like it must mean that at least some part of them is like me too. Overworked, stressed out mother who has no idea what she is doing and is trying desperately not to raise a couple of serial killers. LOL!

Beachbelle - I've been sitting here for at least five minutes staring at
your post and trying to think whether or not I even know any middle-class people with nice sensibilities.  LOL

There are still a lot of popular television shows making it with the "sensible middle class."  I would think a writing audience would be no different  when broken down to that particular demographic category.

Isn't that the truth!  Excellent point.

Hmm. Don't know.
How I write, though, I'm like Hem and Bukowski in that they decided not to go with the big words. I feel if I can't say it in understandable small words, I'm not doing a good job. More of a challenge than might be thought because I translate medical jargon into regular folk language.

How does that mean I view my reader? Well, I think they are people who are busy and don't have time to study to puzzle out an article. So I need to grab their attention then educate em efficiently and painlessly, and hopefully with some zest and fun thrown in.

Hi Beachbelle! How's it been going? Good to read you again. Great advice too.
