Sadhanm, I agree with you that people on both sides of the border want peace. The way things are developing, it seems that even at the political level the mindset is changing on both sides. The western powers incluidng the US, are quite happy to sell military hardware to both India and Pakistan. from the bleeding that is continuing. And, both the countries carry on increasing their military spending, when both will do well to reduce the forces and invest into human resource. The Kashmir issue requires a political solution which could free both the countries from the bleeding that continues. We all fervently hope that democracy will now take root in Pakistan and that assemblies will complete their terms.

desired peace

Yasmeen: I am really happy to read your piece for peace. People of our sub-continent desire peace, for themselves and for others. But powers that be and some others do not want us to have peace. Kashmir is an issue that can be solved, given the political intent to do so.

As we discuss peace at political level - at popular level there is hardly any dispute - there are forces that operate against us. Take for example, the US Administration. While the officials of two countries are discussing stregthening of bilateral measures for mutual understanding, USA sends a big supply of arms to Pakistan! And for what? To help the fight against Al Qaida. But what does the arms supply contain - a large number of tanks and antiship missiles. Does al Qaida operate on the seas that you need anti-ship missiles? And do American tanks climb mountains where Al Qaida men may or may not be located?

This is what creates distrust, and as long as military virtually rules Pakistan, elements of doubts will remain. It for you to assert your democracy, and remove the impediments to peace. I have visited your country, and I have many freidns there. I know, people of Pakistan want peace; so do we: Let's join hands to win peace.

Yes, we need peace.
Thank you for your comments. We do need peace so that all of us could get on with productive work, rather than worrying about how to deal with the adversary.
