Saved from what?

As a former Christian, I can answer that question--from the fallen sin of Adam and Eve--The sin of disobedience and free will, seeking knowledge forbidden, knowledge which would make one WISE.  Hmmm. . . how can man exist without seeking knowledge?  The transcended Christian understands that the writings of the ancients were meant to control the behavior of the tribe and put the power of salvation (from the above mentioned "sin" and be able  to return to the presence of God) in the hands of the few (priests) of God.  Now, with the idea of a personal savior, that priest is exed out, in reality, but the idea of sin remains.  It is time to release ourselves from the sin of Adam and Eve, see that our nature is perfect as God made it to be, take personal responsibility for our actions and repent of the real assaults against others through the weaknesses we fall pray to, like envy, jealousy, lust for others, greed, gluttony, pride beyond real acheivements (boastfulness) and the all encompassing LIE, liars, bearing false witness, and the worst of all condemnation and judgement of others (who are we to judge the hearts of men, anyway?)  The name of Jesus is used as a metaphor, a gateway to what we hope will be an afterlife of peace, free from grief and sorrows--there is no reason for us to have to experience these in this mortal life, if we hold to the understanding, as the Hindu and eastern philosophies do, that all things are as they should be and seek to know the good and wisdom of events that happen to us, consequences of our actions.  Believing on the name of Jesus, that he in fact subdued the temptations of life and is the champion of God's plan--then we are all released from the idea of sin.

peace,

Freerain

if you recall
there were other covenants that God made with humans before the brith and death of Jesus ( I did a post on this as a matter of fact). Those covenants were in place and used as atonement for sin, which meant that those that were in agreement with that legally binding contract or covenant had assurance of entering Heaven. When Jesus died on the cross, then the need for all other sacrificies and such were done away with because Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. That in no way means that the other covenants are of no use. I'm surpised west, that someone such as yourself who claims to have read the scriptures would not already know this.

of course unicorn

those of whom I speak are after Christ.

from maybe about 100 A.D. into the Reformation -- people who probably never heard about having to accept Jesus as their personal savior.

Saint Benedict, Mother Teresa, St. Francis, etc.  good Christian believers all -- them and the millions of people who had lived during that time.

I assume you are addressing me although my name is not unincorn
I'm not evading anything. if you'd read your comments a little way down on the page, I already answered the guestion about those before Christ. Do you need some glasses? I'll be happy to donate some if it would help you to read more thoroughly. Seriously.

unincorn
are you evading the question?
do you think John 3:3 applies to all these generations of Christians who've lived before "accepting Jesus in your heart" was preached?

good grief!!
as I wrote in my recent post about who's going to heaven, which I'm sure I remember receiving a comment from you on, so I think you read it, HOW THE HECK SHOULD I KNOW???
There is one way and only one way to get to heaven according to scripture, read John 3:3. So if a person has been born again, then scripture states that is the WAY AND ONLY way to get to heaven, Jesus said so Himself, are you disputing what He said? God and ONLY God see's mans heart. If you have to ask, "am I going to heaven?", then chances are you're not, if you haven't accepted Jesus Christ as your personally Savior and been born again. How many more ways can I say the same thing before you get it? Why do you care? Why do I bother? Why am I slumming again!!?

unicorn
so you would say then that many of these saints I mention are indeed going to Heaven?

Heaven will be open to all honest persons who pray to God or Allah or Him with a heart open to kindness, good deeds, and care for others. I'm not in either of the two camps you describe.

It really is sad to think of all the people under various religions who believe wholeheartedly in God (or whatever their higher power is named) and do what they can to help people and lead good lives, and then hear that only those who accept Jesus are going to Heaven.  It's a pass or fail world apparently.  God doesn't give Bs, Cs, or Ds, just As and Fs.
