I think that a lot of people use "metal illness" as a crutch, an excuse to

not do right, and entitlement to a blanket pardon and a lifetime of not having to accept responsibility for one's self and one's actions.

It is difficult to want to sever ties with your child, and I have no children so maybe it is easier for me to make this armchair diagnosis.  Tough love~~come back when you want to treat me with the respect to which I deserve and am entitled.

No Excuses!  That is the answer to the question of, "Why?"

I will make it right!  is the answer to the question of, "What?"

Even if you were going to go through the courts and legal proceedings, my gut tells me that you would not follow through with criminal charges and a criminal record on the girl.  And further, the girl knows now very well how to manipulate you, and that even if you file charges, she will recognize it as a bluff.

How many times have I asked parents complaining about their adult children who violate them, cause trouble and steal from them, "Does s/he live here?"  "No."  "Does s/he have a key?" "No."  "How does s/he get in then?"  "Well, I let them in, but..."

"You need to put them out and stop letting them in!  Then your problem is solved!  How long are you going to keep putting up with this nonsense?"

But I imagine it must be difficult to "stop being a parent" and to sit and watch your offspring self-destruct and not try to aid or rescue them...

So, I don't know what to tell you.  You know what the answers and the options are, but I understand your not liking any of them!
