growler, there's a lot here I agree with, and some that made me think. My son is headed for the NBA and I have no doubt that if he continues to focus the way he has, that he will get there. No mean feat for a white Australian boy. But that doesn't mean he can slack off academically. In fact we have been told that unless he gets good grades, American colleges won't even look at him, no matter what his ability is. Here in Australia, we put sportsmen and women on pedestals just as you do over there. Is it wrong? I'm not sure. I know that, as you have stated, it must be difficult for these young people to be given everything they want and then also expected to be role models. However, many of them take their public duties on board with a smile. At least the American sportspeople that come to Australia do. Even if their private lives leave much to be desired, they are usually always there for the kids.
