our impression of the Pilgrims is that of a pious, persecuted lot.
It was a Puritan who ruled England for 20 years (Cromwell) in the most despotic rule that country had ever seen -- people were only to glad to have a king back.
our view of the First Thanksgiving has generally been that of the Pilgrims -- nice people who befriended the INdians and there was peace and harmony,
Only in the last fiew years, with books and TV specials about the Native Americans have we heard of what the Pilgrims did.
You remember Roger Williams? -- He fled Massachusetts colony to set up Rhode Island due to religious persecution by the Puritans.
This is sort of liek the impressions of Custer's Last Stand for so many years -- a heroic stand against fearsom esavages who ambushed him and his brave band.
And now -- the real has come out and it is so different.
If it goes against our grain, then it just isn't so -- right?

History also says that Paul Revere rode through the town of Lexington.
We've heard what the Native Americans have to say. Now, let's hear from the Pilgrims.

Thank you for this excellent reminder Westwend. Thanksgiving is pitched as a holiday of harmony and sharing between Indians and whites, but the truths are much darker...and sadder for those who know. My family knows because I have insisted they listen to what I've learned from reservation experiences and wisdoms gleaned, yet so many remain in ignorance, mostly due to indifference.

Great point, Westwend. That's why my brother-in-law, who is Cherokee, didn't mind at all having to work Thursday and "missing" Thanksgiving.
