at least were aware of the poetry of the passages
something that is missing in the plain english versions whose goal it seems to to elementarize the language to the detriment of the beauty of the Enclish language that tried to reflect the beauty of the original authors.

The best that we can do, I think, is to look at other documents written at the same time that refer to various texts in the Old and New Testaments to help us verify what is real and what is not. For me, the website www.earlychristianwritings.com is a huge benefit. It lists early documents for both the Old and New Testament so that one can read and try to verify what is what.
