I'm glad that you and your dad are able to talk more freely, whatever the reason. Hopefully it continues and he'll be a source of comfort and support for you.
You're right, all you can do is try not to fall prey to the common path of a person with this disease. You can't promise, but you can be aware and try to stay sharp.
I think you'll be fine as you're doing everything you can...
