Maybe hell is portrayed as such a horrible place because the real one is actually worse, and it would be a shame to let anyone slip away if it could be helped.

The concept of Heaven and Hell was formed as a way to control the masses. It was the church's responsiblity to guide humanity to God. And what better way than to frighten them with tales of eternal tortures. Heavenly rewards were metted out by church officials, to rich families who donated vast sums of money to ensure them a place in heaven. Pretty sick, right?
On the bright side, there have been plenty individuals who actually helped many people. It's interesting to read that many, if not all, of the saints who performed miracles, all preached forgiveness and love and rarely spoke of a hell, unless asked. Perhaps they knew that as children of God, we all carry Him inside of us. Would God send Himself to Hell? Or would He find a way to return to Himself? Think about that.
