Thanks for the suggestions but I am just not an adventurous eater. Tried crab legs..once. Pulling meat out of an animal appendage just wasn't for me. Seafood in general resembles it's original form far too closely for me. I'll sitck with the anonymous filet o'fish, but thanks anyway.

Canine, oysters are a bitch to open! It was the hardest part
of my job in a fine dining pantry which was set up right in the dining room. I cut my hands so many times on the oyster shucker! And the first person did not even have the right tool.
And if he was looking for a pearl....How did he (or she? let's not be sexist!) know about the pearl that might be inside the shell? Hmmmmmm.........

I could make a meal of oysters, clams and mussels but that doesn't mean that they don't look disgusting.

Canine, I used to shuck oysters at a restaurant.
You are right. How did they figure out how to open it? And once they did get it opened, what compelled that first person to taste the contents?!

Of course, It was Adam and Eve. God made the oyster and told them not to eat it because it was part of what he had created to keep the oceans clean; but you know what they ate the darn things anyway. They talked to the animals, the oyster told them how to let him out, and oh my goodness they ate him alive, no shrimp sauce, nothing.

Hollee,
That's no help at all! Who was it? :-) aphrodisiac, don't you love that word? It's an interesting word. Do you think maybe it was aphrodite, that would mean it was a woman, maybe she was pregnant! I have my answer. See I told you that Hollee was smart!

I think that Frankenkitty may be onto something. This guy (I'm only theorizing it's a guy), may have watched the otters roll over on their backs, and whack at the shells with a rock (on their stomachs) and eat them with gusto. He probably thought, "Wow that looks tasty" and did the same. Where the otter got the idea is another question.

Your post reminded me
that some animals, like otters, eat clams. Maybe it was a desperate act, I'm sure things were tough in the past. Good question. I have no idea how to answer, buut the thought of humans imitating animals like otters did cross my mind. I don't know...

canine - supposedly oysters are an aphrodisiac -so some man was frantically
opening them by the millions to get lucky. How he found that out--I have no clue.
I figure we know to eat things because we saw animals eat them. However, I have seen some dogs eat poo - so I would have nixed that plan in the bud.

I wonder about odd stuff, too. Don't worry. I think we all do!! :)
And, I dunno. But I am willing to bet it was a man who was crazy enough to try it first.

canine, I must admit, I'm like you when it comes to this sort of
question pondering. So, you need not feel alone. I have brought up many questions such as this to others and yes, they often look at me and roll their eyes, but those closest to me are used to it and I actually get them thinking about the question, too. I think you may find a post I wrote a few months ago interesting... "Colder than a witch's tit" HEY!! Speaking First Hand...I Beg to Differ... Especially the part about the clam. You will definitely relate to how my mind works.
