This is wonderful. This way you can have a grand secret. Nobody really knows if you had any misery. Not of those puffy eyes, hair pulled out in chunks, clothing torn you don't have to let them see any of that stuff that goes with normal misery. If it doesn't need company is it truly normal? lol

My misery doesn't like company, in part because sometimes it's good to wallow, as you said. And I also don't like people to see me cry, or show "weakness."  But when that misery goes on for too long, sometimes company helps bring me out of my miserable funk.  But bear in mind that I live alone, so I rarely have company, whether I'm miserable or not!

Canine...It does not suprise
me that I feel much the same about this.  When I am real sick for example I don't want anyone trying to "take care" of me, I like to wallow in it as you said.  I like to concentrate on the misery itself, deal with it, and eventually overcome it.  People around just distract me from this.  However, for many, many people I think it is true that misery loves company, I have seen it play like that too often.

Don't know Quirk,
Just know that I hate company when I'm miserable, funny though I think it's when people want to be around the most! LOL Maybe they like me to be miserable?

Canine, I have seen George Carlin live twice...he is starting to show his

age.  The second time I saw he he literally was reading off notebook paper.

Have you seen the tribute he wrote after his wife passed away?

I'm voting for "misery hates company."

And I'd never put a hot shower in the same camp as anything miserable cuz I love hot showers!

Oh, right, I signed off just after I made that last comment, when you said that I was entitled my happiness and blew a virtual raspberry, I thought that maybe my "sharing" my own experiences wasn't helpful and I was rubbing salt in some old wound or other.  I meant that maybe I wasn't being helpful, not you.

Well....

the answer is no. Misery just wants everybody else to be miserable, whether in company or alone.

But then , there's the old adage: "A sorrow shared is a sorrow halved; a joy shared is a joy doubled".....

Misery, let me tell you about misery, why I was so miserable.....

then we can all figure out who grew up in a shoebox (Monty Python).  I really am trying to break myself of that, Hollee, and Canine, it's annoying, isn't it?

Oddly enough, that friendship seems to be breaking up because my life is picking up and by comparison hers doesn't look THAT much better.  I'm like the verbal equivablent of the plain girl with the hottie in the bar who looks good by comparison. Besides, I don't want to complain about my man, it would be reverse advertising.

What I hate is when I'm miserable and someone tells me how much

miserabl-er they are than me--so then I have to be miserabl-er-er until we reach a state of miserablerist.

Might as well not be miserable after all that.

Miss Misery,
Maybe it's a guy thing, because I just figured out that I may have had a long-term friendship with a woman that may be ending because we have nothing to complain to each other about now.  She's getting married to a guy she's complained to me so much I wonder how she can stand him and I have met a man so wonderful I don't want to share him with anyone.  Girls just gotta have fun.

Hee Hee...sounds like a stand-up comedians act! Well, I don't know why they say misery loves company. Maybe misery loves company, but company sure doesn't love misery!.....or did you already say that? I'm getting confused! LOL

Brilliant post. Funny too.
What you said makes perfect sense.  Only those who like to share stories about their misfortunes love company, however, not in all circumstances does misery love company.  I pretty much handle my misery as you do.

Most people may not be as
empathetic as you.  As for everything you described in your first paragraph (rolling in it, lol) I'm totally with you.  But seperately, of course. Because we are in agreement that we don't share.

canine - I think you are a rare person.  Ever notice how people complain very loudly and grummble away as much as they can -- that is what I think it means for misery to love company - it seems most people want to share their bad moods.

Take my latest post that you read and commented on (thank you) - I am mizzy today and so I get right on BlogIt and share it with all of you poor unsuspecting darling bloggers!

posted by canine277 on November 12, 2004 at 9:28 AM | link to this | reply

When I am miserable I don't mind company as long as they own their own misery and aren't trying to steal mine.  And of course my misery has to trump their misery so that they feel miserable for feeling miserable at all.
