This part of your post is interesting:
"The first time I remember, we left a church because they refused to let us do things as a family; they insisted that we assimilate as individuals and not as a unit.
The next time, my dad was getting excited about the concept of meeting in homes for church, of making the church a more close-knit body. The suspicious pastor accused him of staging a coup and attempting to take over the church. We left that church to assure him that we weren't interested in taking over anything."
It makes me think of the other parts of our society that treat us much the same way -- insisting that we assimilate as individuals and not as a family unit, such as in school, etc. I can't think of any advantage to this except to weaken the family in order to control the individual for the selfish purposes of the overlords.

I shall explain
Ok, sorry about that. :) Let me expound a little bit. I grew up as an Evangelical Christian which is a type of Protestant. It differs from Catholicism in that we didn't believe in the authority of the Pope or the divinity of Mother Mary. Our churches were non-liturgical. What we shared with Catholicism, though, was the belief in Jesus as the Son of God who died for our sin. Hope that makes it a little clearer...:) Thanks for reading!

Fascinating...
So glad you joined Blogit. I'll be coming back for some visits.
As for your member profile: I remember reading Alan and Naomi as a young adolescent. I didn't know there was a movie. I got to see Elie Wiesel speak at Northern Michigan University. Such a heart-wrencing life history, and such a powerful man.
Again, welcome to Blogit!
