I'm with you. And you ask a good question. What if you were told you would live forever? Would you live like there is no tomorrow? For me, eternal life isn't the end all. I'm looking for that ultimate union with "God". Eternal life just means that I've got plenty of time to get there. Of course, it might also mean that I could try a few things that maybe I wouldn't have before.

On a similar note, if one believes that this is one of many lifes we live, then eternal life is already granted. It's just how one will spend those lives - in pain or pleasure . . .

I think you're right.  When Christ said "It is finished" and the veil of the temple was torn it meant that the days of the Kingdom had begun.  If someone told you that you now had eternal life, how would you know it?  Would you wait until you were dead for the proof, or would you start living as if you were going to live forever?  If only the good will remain and the rest gets washed away, why would anyone try to stock up on worthless crap?  If worldly riches truly made a person happy in this life, I might understand; but I've known a lot of rich people and while thay could buy and do more things, I wouldn't say that any of them were made happy by the stuff they owned.
