Thank you, Arch!
That's the encouragement I needed!  I've lost 10 pounds, but have been slacking off on exercise lately.  I can notice the results (not good) within a week or two, so am getting back on the track.  While not gone, my determination was overshadowed by family stuff, so I'm pushing it back to first place.

You'll do it!
Sounds as if you are determined to reach your goals, so you will. We want you around to read for a long, long time!

The road is smooth

so far.  I've lost 2 pounds.  For me, that's a great start.  On weight programs, I often gain at first; very depressing, but this is so much better.  It's making it easy to start to not eat foods I know I shouldn't.

How is the road treating you? Keep marching!

Amazman, Whammie, Mary x,

Thank you all so much for reading and sharing.  I've heard that about a habit, although if it's one I don't especially like, I've found they break very easily.  What is that, anyway?

Whammie, you have the great sense of humor and the sex habit; cannot be bad things.   Yes, my husband is the best!

Mary x, I hope I can provide info for everyone as I learn how to manage this stupid disease.  I'm all set up with my various appointments now (diet, diabetes, info, etc.), so in about a month, I should be better educated about it.

Amazman, congrats on your abstinence.  That's an outstanding record.

You've all inspired me (getting sloppy now ), and I really appreciate it.  (psst:  You are all great bloggers and writers, too, so I feel doubly inspired).  What a great way to start the week!

the 21 days is to break up the works of your present circuitry
With renewed determination and a support team you can do just about anything. This only works when we are determined to do what it takes. 95 was the date I started abstinence. The cravings don't go away but I'm still clean. You can do this.

Witchflower,
I look forward to your future posts with much interest as diabetes runs in my family so I'm at risk but also have a great big sweet tooth.  No sympathy, much admiration for your determination.

amazman...it depends upon the habit!
During my drought periods and periods of abstinence, I have gone more than 21 days without sex, and I still have a sex habit!

posted by WHAMENATOR on November 13, 2004 at 1:58 PM | link to this | reply

you can do this
I've been told that it takes 21 days to break a habit. If that is true think about what you want to accomplish and then what you can reasonably accomplish. Give yourself the time needed to do so and stay active physically. Wish I had a magic wand.

Sketty
Thanks!  It's interesting you say that because I've had this feeling for some time that the beginning of success is just around a sharp corner.  If I can turn it, I will tip the balance in my favor.  I hope that's what's happening.  I do believe it's possible now, and am trying to stifle the little voices inside that say I've been on this path before and something always happened to block me.  Guess I'll just have to eat the blocks, like Pac-Man.  No, wait, what would the calorie/carb count be on blocks?  Hmm.  Thanks so much for the encouragement.  It means more than people realize.

Bless you
I really feel that you will do this.  You sound so positive and as tho you've turned some kind of a mental corner.  I look forward to reading of all your future successes so please tell us about them, no matter how small

Thanks, Poms!
Yes, I do want it.  I actually dream about walking without getting short of breath. Thanks for the encouragement!  You're doing great yourself.

You can do it. If it someting you want in your heart
I was the same about 3 months ago I could not even walk up a flight of stairs with out having to stop and get my breath. Well now I go for a walk just about every night it is not far but it is on ground that is not flat it is in a hay field. So you will do it. Happy walking and have fun if you can only walk one block now try for one and a half next week just dont over do it. I dont want to read you hurt yourself walking or anything.

I think even the natural sugar content of fruit has to be watched, but I'll find out more after my visit with a dietitician at the end of this month.  I love both of them, although fresh pineapple seems to be too acidic or something if I eat too much.  Thanks for reading and thinking about me.

Can you eat Pineapple and mango?
I love fruit. I bet that has sugar in it though, doesn't it. I am so sorry you are suffering.  I hope you get better Witchflower.

Thanks, Ca88 and BB

That is pretty much what I assume is the sensible way to eat.  I have been aware of blood sugar problems for a long time and use the multiple small meals, avoid things that cause blood sugar spike, etc.  Now I'm working on cutting out the treat-type things.   Not much for eating bread (except hamburger buns, but I am greatly reducing the fast food intake), so that's not a problem.

Thanks for the encouragement.  It's probably a good time for me to learn patience and tenacity.

Witchflower, I was going to ask my mother tonight, but when I called she was in one of her wandering moods so it was no use asking her. But I do remember she mostly followed the "food pyramid"  you know, the one which says how much protein, carbohydrates, vegetables, etc you should have each day. I know she was careful with fruits because of their fructose content (same as sugar) and some vegetables for the same reason. She gave up alcohol totally and things like cakes, candy etc. She also ate about 5 small meals through the day instead of 3 larger ones.

I've been on Weight Watchers myself and found it excellent. Its especially helpful because there's alot of Weight Watchers stuff in the supermarket all ready to go. Good luck with it all!

Just keep at it little by little
and soon you won't want to return to your old ways. I was unfit after illness a couple of years ago and I had to make msyelf get started again. All the best to you.
