Beach...
Yes, it is frustrating that it comes to us late, but to coin a cliche - it is far better late than never. Keep going, clearly you're on the right path.

Fiction writers do just that for readers but first they have to find the way

L.E. Gant. I did pursue that career for many years
and the idea of writing fiction was then just a notion. Now my head is full of stories and I have a need to write in a way which is not just about providing good information.
Luckily I am very proficient at my old kind of work and so if I do just enough of it I will sruvive adequately until I see if the fiction writing goes anywhere commercially.

Klara - I have survival needs of course but when I want something...
I HAVE TO GO FOR IT. It means that I have to work like crazy for a time but then later I will be able to determine which activities to scale down. Like you I want to make money and I can do so with journalism. `However if I do not make a good attempt at the fiction genre it will always feel like something is left undone. I will willingly sacrifice a few $$ to do so.
A few years ago I stopped working full/time so I could get away from editing and back to writing. At the time people thought I was mad and I worked intensely hard. My earnings took a while to catch up and there were lean periods - ie just after 9/11 but it was the best thing I ever did (for me).

I'd love to join that journey, Beachie.
Unfortunately, like LE states in his post, I'm too busy taking care of the survival needs. Sad really. You go and conquer that world for both of us!

Because you were too busy finding ways to make a career
.
How long were you working reporting and editing?
Did you have the time to be creative AND earn enough to meet the survival needs?
Were you really interested in fiction?
There are thousands of questions about why you took the path you did, and you know the answers, even if no one else does.

A world of one's own creation where we decide who lives, who dies, every aspect of how and when and why. The opportunity to play god is a strong lure indeed.
