In my comment from the previous post, I failed to mention that I always come come up with the main character(s) first, then it's on to the plot stuff.
I agree readers don't have to like all the characters, but if you want them to keep reading, the main character better have some likable qualities. The novel that I'm working on in the fiction section here is about a hitman (I have a backstory that goes back to his childhood) on a quest for revenge. My challenge is to make the reader like/root for a person who actually should be a "villain" without resorting to cheap, tugging-on-the-heart-strings tactics. The plot is important (there will be a few twists and turns), but it's mainly character driven.
