I'm not sure about the price range, since I don't live in USA. If you're looking for good quality Japanese cars, you can try Toyota or Honda.
I wouldn't dwell into the various models under these two brands, since I'm not an expert in this area. But, you can get loads of information on which model is suitable for your needs by asking people you trust or surfing the Net.
If you are adventurous, you can also consider Hyundai (Korean brand). Apparently, the quality of this brand is not too bad either.
