Well put, Barnabas,
You are so right about winning the hearts and minds of Americans.  You are also right about the virtual political limbo or vacuum that would be created by a speedy Coalition withdrawal.  And I do believe Americans would support a war they consider just.  However, the fear factor involved has risen to the point of comparison with that of (don't say it!) Vietnam that I doubt there will be reconsideration on the part of most Americans.  Duty bound but the heart isn't in it.  And with the insurgency gaining momentum, I doubt if there will ever be a chance for it.

Iraq? Now what?
Well written my friend.  I was just considering this morning however, what choices the U.S. led forces have, now that they are firmly entrenched in a virtual hell-hole.  I am of the mindset that it would be completely immoral and irresponsible for them to leave now and let that country fall into even worse anarchy where the powerless fall victim to the evil.  The best thing now would be for the U.S. military to not only fight a war on the ground... but also over the airwaves.  Public relations is the key because everyone knows that this is the new Vietnam and it scares the hell out of most Americans!  I believe that this one is even more dangerous than the original Vietnam!  However, if they can successfully win over the American public, they will have the support to stay there long term and bring stability to an increasingly unstable region!
