Honesty Hurts
The truth is that we're all afraid to look in the mirror for fear we'll be terrified by what we see, so instead we turn off our brains and vote for people who assure us that everything's fine, and the enemy is NOT our own reflection, but some obscue "boogey man" (Communism, terrorism, jihadism) so we can direct our critical gaze outward, instead of inward, where it would do some good.
