Thanks everybody for commenting.
My question would be more like: is blogging a form of art? If not, how come so many people spend so much time blogging, even though this is not for them a real source of income? What is it that a blogger is really trying to achieve? I am going to spend some time thinking about those questions.

I think it is all about demand and, as Witty points out, the demand for tradesmen is higher than for blogs. Writing, painting and generally creating are not viewed as legitimate careers probably because the majority of the world's population cannot relate to the desire or need to put words on paper or paint on canvas.

On this basis, I would say, your answer is directly linked to the kind of basic needs that tradepeople satisfy. Blogging is like going to pub, so, entertaining yourself. Self-induldence at the internet level. This doesn't pay money, does it?

I suppose it's because most people can survive without reading a blog, but would find it hard to live without an adequate water supply, a table to eat from, that sort of thing. Not that I agree, I'd much rather read a philosophy book than gaze for hours at a newly-papered wall, but that's just me!
