Thanks Inns.

I wasn't meaning to cast stones or endorse anything, I just noticed a pattern.   I am a weird thinker, I know this.   Don't worry, it's all good, but thanks for leaving this comment.     I appreciate your thoughts.

Sorry tremacc...
just re-read my own post and I did sound like quite the pontificating little so-and-so.  I think it was a great post, and I did not mean to imply anything in my comment.  I took out a little frustration in your comment section.  My kids and I have been having a long running battle on what programs are appropriate.  "All my friends get to watch Jerry Springer, how come I can't?"  Why would someone want their kids to see that?  Okay, here I go again...

How true...

Today, we are fascinated with the details of a stranger's private life (celebrities included). I guess talk shows were the predecessors of today's reality TV, which has got most of the advanced nations hooked.

Hello Inns-- Yes it is a desensitizing trend.

And no, I don't relish "the sight of a thirteen-year-old girl trying to figure out which of the three married men that she slept with (1 being her uncle) is the daddy of her baby"

I just recognized the impact that the whole genre has had on our society and how it has branched out and spilled over into other things.

Yep, that was it.   An observation.    Just noticed and wanted to write an interesting post about it.

I do believe though that we are all exhibitionist and secret peeping toms though, how else did the world get this way?   We all had a part in it.   Anyway, thanks for your feedback.

What scares me is the kind of influence they have...

they desensitize society.  Incest was shocking thirty years ago-it's certainly only a minor blip on the radar screen now, promiscuity was shocking-hardly nowadays, murder and rape was shocking-I am afraid that's not the case now.  In today's society you are going to have to push the envelope if you want people to take notice which means finding worse and worse things to appease the audience.  And it is the audience that wants this, don't forget.  Television moguls are in the business for the money and they don't get paid unless people are watching, so it stands to reason that someone out there is watching these horrendous events unfold and loving every minute of it.  I don't know about you but the sight of a thirteen-year-old girl trying to figure out which of the three married men that she slept with (1 being her uncle) is the daddy of her baby, scares the hell right out of me.   But society has always loved a good freak show.  Gladiators, geeks, car accidents, serial killers' movies of the week...

Yes, Cassandra. I agree, definitely influenced in my opinion.

I know that everyone in the world doesn't watch talk shows, but I think our that our current trends and  cultures have been shaped and influenced by them since their inception.   Thank you.

tremacc, I think some parts of society are maybe not shaped, but in some way influenced by these talk shows, much the same way that the media influences society. I don't often watch them myself, but on my days off Jerry Springer provides comic relief!

Aardvark, do you think that things like tabloids, reality tv and blogging

were birthed because of the influence of the talk show genre in modern society?

Good point Scribey, thanks for reading.

Talk shows tend to glamorize and sensationalize misfits and their amoral behavior. Because of this, I see it as a negative cultural trend.

I am not a fan of talk shows. But apparently they are a major force in
people's lives.  nicely developed post.

No, Beachbelle.   I don't watch Jerry Springer either.   Although I do watch reality shows like Survivor, Big Brother and The Apprentice.   What I am really asking is if you think that our society has been affected by that.   The onslaught of personal information in mainstream society initated by the talk show genre... aren't we in essence doing the same thing on Blogit?

I must be a freak because I am not fascinated by the J-Los of this world
or people who do really stupid, selfish. I can only watch that stuff once in a blue moon. But one person like me does not a theory undo.

Sass, I hear ya.

So, do you think that the way society behaved toward one another changed when talk shows came on the scene?   I'm curious about that aspect.   Thanks for your feedback, by the way.

After watching these shows
You begin to realize how very boring and average your own life is. If you aren't having 3 affairs, and your pregnant by God knows who, then what is the point? The point is that you now need a DNA test just to prove that 2 of the guys aren't the daddy. These shows actually help me to be thankful for what I have, and what I definately do not want to be a part of.
