So God uses figures of speech and should not be taken liturally?
Now more than likely it was translated into a figure of speech at some point or the figure of speech was added by someone, and so did not say 'the four corners of the world' in the orginal versions of the myths of Noah. Such figures of speech normally are used to add some color to the stories.
There was still a very good point to be made by it.

The "four corners of the Earth" as well as"The four winds" are idioms in use since biblical times. It is based on the two dementional visual perception of map making. Put simply, it was as much a figure of speach then as it is now. Get real.
