They Actually Have A Book Out...
...called (as I recall) "The Verse By The Side Of The Road" that contains both the history of this friendly advertising campaign and all of the verses ever posted.
I believe that many of the verses came from people all over the country who sent them in, much like people send in those anecdotes to Reader's Digest today.
Several years ago, I had a copy of that book, but it has been packed away somewhere--likely, when I was moving home from college--and I don't think I'm going to wait for it to re-surface before buying another one, if I can find one still available.
I love stuff that is considered to be "Americana"--in fact, have a t-shirt reading "I
Americana!" that, unfortunately, I can no longer fit into. But I designed it myself!!!
Anyway, on this note, allow me to take you to a blog entry that will tell you about my online store where you will find, among other things, three (to date) books I've written that will appeal to people who like this kind of stuff!
On this note, I'll close, as Family Feud is about to come on!
Peaceout!

I don't remember seeing them or reading them, but I do remember my mother reciting them to me when I was a small girl. Thanks for the memory.

You're Probably Too Young...
...to remember Burma Shave signs, but you would have enjoyed those, too.
They were put out by a company selling some kind of shaving product (shaving cream, I believe), and they consisted of red signs with white letters along the side of the road.
Each message had five signs in its cluster--the first four for the four lines of verse, and the last one for the name of the product.
Try these on for size:
If daisies are
Your favorite flower
Keep pushing up
Those miles-per-hour
Burma Shave
Don't lose your head
To save a minute
You need your head
Your brains are in it
Burma Shave
He lit a match
To check his tank
And now they call him
Skinless Frank
Burma Shave
That's all for now. Will share more in the future! AJ
