I have never understood why religious 'celebration' is included in schools, it belongs in churches, or in schools specially set-up for the particular denomination concerned. At least in the UK parents have the constitutional right to withdraw their children from religious assemblies, I'm not sure if that is the case in America, or maybe it is in some states and not others. I live in a city which has a very large Muslim population and they have their own schools, although many of them do attend mainstream schools. The secondary school my daughter attends has a large number of Muslim pupils - getting on for half, in fact. The assemblies in schools such as this tend to incorporate both religions, Christianity and Muslim, but the pupils are free not to attend if their parents so wish. Ideally, though, there would be no religion mentioned at all.
