I've always been interested in teaching ESL. Don't really know why except for my fascination with other cultures. A recent study in Australia showed that Asian students are topping the marks in all areas of education yet, being mostly International students (ie. not born here and sent here for education), English is their second language. Just shows you what determination can do!

With ESL
a noisy classroom is definitely not always the best way to run with a program. Individuals all have different styles of learning, and in the early years (0-8 years old), while they are still coming to terms with L1, it is not uncommon for the children to be silent learners. What I mean by this, is that you try and try to get them talking and active and wonder where you might have gone wrong and then one day, they just speak. There is definitely an absorption stage to learning a second language. Some children will pick it up from TV or the playground. In the classroom it is important that they get the basics and feel confident to experiment with this new language.
(Just for your info - not claiming to be an expert, just reflecting on my experiences as well as study. Trained in early childhood teaching - which also includes a lot of language developmental theory, recently completed my Masters in Teaching second languages (applied linguistics) and had the opportunity to teach English in Japan and Taiwan.)
I look forward to reading more of your thoughts.
