Beautifully written

I closed my eyes and could see the country roads around the village where I grew up.  I love the words "gifts of memory".  I look forward to reading more posts.

Thank you.
I'm fascinated by your history, and pleasantly surprised by your comments.  You see, I admire your style so much.  I'm flattered by the White comparison.  Thank you.  Regarding your grandmother, I believe I'll email you because we have some interesting similarities.

To the Lake
I think that is what the essay by EB White is called.  Your memories reminded me of that essay, but also your style, which, like the lake you describe, is lucid and still--beautifully spare prose.  I wish I could write like you.  With me it's nonrestrictive clause after clause after clause:  too much Henry James in college, I'm afraid.  Your relationship with your grandmother interests me because I was tutored by mine (I wouldn't say favored--she was not openly affectionate) in certain unconventional matters, namely supernatural.  Yup--Grandma was not just a bitch, but a witch!  She brought it from the old country, but never taught my mother because she felt my mother wasn't a "seer".  I was the one.  So it is very interesting for me to be (I hope) a rationalist and have this secret history of hexes and spells and herbcraft....
