Kooka - speaking of word.smith, I hope and pray she is okay.
Jamaica was pretty hard hit by Ivan. I wonder when we will hear from her again.

You are then admitting that the Bible is outdated and that we really should not be looking to it for answers now?
I compeltely agree

If we were to take everything we see in the Bible
literally, we'd be in no ends of trouble. It's good to remember that many years have passed since it's writing and what was the law then is not the same as we know it now. Stay out of trouble, don't kill thy neighbour.

Great post!
In Virginia, the legislature is full of Bible quoting people, as long as no one tries to remind them of the scriptures that talk about helping the poor or "turning the other cheek" or loving your enemies... in other words they don't quote Jesus very much, but lots of Old Testament stuff. And they really seem to believe they are doing "god's work." However, someone found a law on the books that was still legitimate that said stores had to close on Sunday. Well, the fundies know that they are nowhere without the Republican businessman in this country, so they literally RAN to the capitol to retract that law.... Not a one said anything about the scripture you just quoted. Fascinating times we live in....

Yet more proof the Bible is not the unedited Word of God. Great post.

...I guess I was thinking Sunday, but then I don't live in Golders Green any more, where it was definitely Saturday.
Personally, I'd opt for a Wednesday Sabbath. Two friendly 2-day weeks instead of the tyrrany of five days.

You know, I forgot to ask:
WHICH Sabbath?
Seventh day or first day
or maybe friday.

If your neighbor rides to work on an ass, do you have to kill the ass too?

You could hire someone to kill him
but then you would have to kill the killer because he worked on the Sabbath. And then you would have to kill yourself for working on the Sabbath.

you gotta go to the village elders and have a trial.
you'd be a witness -- but there's gotta be a second witness.
then all the village would get together and stone the sob

Hmm... maybe the translators of the original scriptures took the
common figure of speech literally, i.e., "I could just
kill him for making us work on Saturday!"
