A great posting, disagree as I might.
There has been much discrimination against "non-traditional" families by both church and state, however subtle throughout history. Whether it's attributable to what can be described as "natural" law (this definition alone imparts a tendency to ascribe "unnatural definitions" to any family other than the traditional two parent, heterosexual family) or other reasons, honestly to me does not matter. Single parents and other non-traditional families do not receive the same benefits from society, i.e. tax breaks, healthcare, etc. The fight for more acceptance of this, then, might very well be financially motivated, and not at all spiritually or politically motivated.
