You make a good point. But I still think there is something to be said for the fellowship and the opportunity to hear other points of view. That is about as much as I support the local church I attend (okay, and a few dollars into the plate).

the judges

let's wee who else?

Jesus (whom I prefer to call Yeshua), the apostles, Paul -- a few others.

wonder how they got their faith?

IN fact, Yeshua taught pretty vehemently against the organized religion -- Paul did too in Hebrews especially -- saying we need no high priest or priestly system and that we can access god directly without need of a mediator of any sort.

institutional religion has the tendency to divert us from god and toward their own agenda.
