Deadline Day - that would Wednesday for a Thursday edition? I worked on a weekly paper for many years. Oh, those happy Tuesday nights until midnight, then Wednesday until 6 or 7 p.m. Then, bright and early Thursday morning to start the "week" all over again.
I enjoyed it, but I reached the point, as a reporter, where I did not want to go to one more city council or board of education meeting, or hear one more wedding anniversary story. I missed it, yet I was relieved to leave.
That sucks that they wouldn't let you off to support your friend. Hope things get better in the future.

So sorry to hear about your friend's mom. I know how it is not to be in a position where you can comfort those you care about in their time of grief. My mother-in-law passed away while I was in Detroit and my ex calls crying--Man! It was tough not to get on a plane and go to Colorado Springs. Sadly, I had to tell him how sorry I was that I couldn't come. That really sucks!!!!!!!!
