History of God
There is a great book by Karen Armstrong called "The History of God". It's not the easiest read, but it is fascinating because she basically does what you have asked for. Takes a look at the history of God and religion from early pagan ritual through modern religions. It's fascinating to learn some the early history of Christianity - and how some of the most power Christian symbols and celebrations are actually taken from pagan celebrations and art.

Where have they all come from ?
Though over simplified, the process is always much the same. Unique and talented philosopher type man is believed to be son of God incarnate, amasses legions of followers, as soon as his life span is over his simple and altruistic message is forgotten. With population growth, time and the natural order of things new interpretations of message are developed, some followers break away from main body to start own sect ( war against main body is optional here ). Original message long since forgotten, more population growth brings more interpretations, more sects break away ( war is also optional here ). As traditions are added to layer upon layer of myth more interpretations cause more sects to break away. ( war less likely but still optional at this point ) As societal norms change, political and other pressures infiltrate dogma more interpretations are developed, more sects break away but as it is now a commonly accepted practice the thought of war against the main body is even less likely ( but still an option if all else fails )........2000+ years of the same old, same old...but they all believe they are following the one true word dontcha know ???

I'm a wandering Christian.
Is that a valid religion? I don't know how else to describe it. Although Jesus never leaves my heart. I'm doing the wandering. Take care.
