Gay Marriages

I might actually care about the gay marriage issue more if the divorce rate didn't lead me to believe no one takes the institution seriously anymore.

It really isn't about getting sex out of the bathrooms.  It is about providing partners with benefits, thereby affecting everyone.

Marriage, as a ceremony, won't make people faithful in the gay community any more than it does in the straight community.  Nor is it really a step toward taking the weird out of the queer.  Will it benefit gays if it is allowed?  Probably, but if it is to be a political issue, perhaps everyone, including the politicians need to focus in on the real purpose behind the marriages, the legal implications, employment benefits, how will it change insurance coverage, both medical and life, adoptions, child custody issues, etc.

If it were just about commitment, well, as they say, do you really need the paper for that?  You may want it, but do you really need it?  And, either way, if it was just a religious ceremony, a bonding, would the government really be involved?  Unfortunately there is a whole lot more that needs considered, and it seems the media and politicians are shying away from that in deferrence for the love and commitment aspects.

Damn.  I should have written my own blog entry instead.
