a conservative agenda in public education
that's a hoot!
All the conservatives who homeschool their kids or send them to private schools because they wouldn't put a dog they liked into the public schools will be interested to hear that.

You decry materialism, but then act like money is the answer where schools are concerned. I, too, think materialism is killing our society and I think this idea that all schools need is more money is part of the problem. After a recent trip to Costa Rica I was struck by what they accomplish in education with little money. Money is a problem for our schools because(at least in my state) most of it goes to the bureaucracy and not enough to the classrooms. Still, it doesn't take a fortune to teach kids what they need to know.

Schools can and should only do so much. I think the real problems lie in the home. Education is not prized. Children are raised by someone other than their parents. Divorce rate is at least 60%. Popular culture promotes materialism, easy money and easy lifestyle. Every kid wants to have what his favorite celebrity has. Hard work and self-control are not valued. And teachers are left trying to make something of these kids.

Is it the school system's responsibility to fix this? Of course not. Do you want to see the government raising children? Government has never had a problem they couldn't make worse and I'm disgusted with the way schools have been turned into laboratories for social experiments. I don't want my children's social conscience formed by people who think sheathing yourself in latex is the height of responsibilty. Here's an idea: TEACH THEM HOW TO READ-TEACH THEM HOW TO CALCULATE.
In matters of behavior, teach civility and courtesy. 'Do no harm' to another. Respect others and their belongings. Respect the authority of teachers.Respect yourself. Teaching that covers theft, drug use, promiscuity, hatred, and disobedience. Leave the rest of it alone!

I don't have a lot of faith in Bush's education ideas. He's not much better than most Democrats on this subject. Let's restore local control to schools. Let's make them compete for students. Liberals like to claim they celebrate diversity, so why are they afraid of schools doing what is best for their communities? ver read any of the stuff Hillary says on this subject? It should make liberal and conservatives alike shudder. She wants to produce a homogeneous society, based on her values. She wants standards and laws regarding all aspects of family life to be the same everywhere. This is what I see the school system moving toward. I don't want anybody's idea promoted across the board and I don't want to be told what I have to teach my child.
