A few remarks . . .
Yes, your query was overly long. Never exceed two pages (then again, perhaps yours didn't).
What most troubled me was the parenthetical remark--paraphrasing here--about " . . . if you know the publication's name . . . " Why on earth would you query a publication whose name is unknown to you? I'll tell you, that one will hit the round file fast.
I've been a published, working writer for 20 years, and I feel honor-bound to suggest you refer to the 2004 Writer's Digest Writer's Market for examples of superb query letters.
