You Ask Some Interesting Questions
I'm particularly struck by this one...
"How do you bring a society from tribal identifications with ethnic or religious groups into an arena where respect for the will of the majority forms the foundation of the state?"
That idea of the will of the majority has certianly been trampled here in the UK when we started bombing Iraq. Some polls put resistance to that move as high as 83%. If that ain't a majority, I don't know what is!
In a wider context, I wonder what makes America / Britain think that their democratic model is The One that should be followed, the best there is worldwide, the only sensible system of governance in existence? Neither country is exactly excelling itself in the democracy / freedom stakes right now!
